A good nights sleep is so important to our feelings of health and wellbeing, but unfortunately for many people bed time is a time of anxiety, boredom, rumination and stress.
Some people find it incredibly difficult to get to sleep in the first place (this is called primary insomnia). Other people wake up multiple times during the night and find it difficult to get back to sleep (this is called middle insomnia). And others wake up very early and are not able to get back to sleep at all (and this is called terminal insomnia). Do any of these sound like you?
Whichever you suffer from, insomnia is extremely debilitating, leaving you feeling tired, anxious and emotionally unstable, impairing your ability to react creatively and appropriately to every day situations. It can affect your relationships, your business and your physical health.
The causes of insomnia are numerous, ranging from stress, anxiety and depression to physical factors such as pain, hormone changes or any number of medical conditions. More temporary factors such as over use of caffeine or other stimulants, or a major change in one’s environment can also contribute to sleep disturbance.
Irrespective of the cause, the most common solution seems to be the use of pharmaceuticals. But whilst sleeping pills can have a positive impact, they do not deal with the root causes of insomnia and can often lead to dependence, which in of itself can lead to other associated problems.
